On a long shot I thought I would report a sighting of an Australian Lorikeet.

We were moving a home in the Acton/Rockwood area and this bird watched us on the roof for a half hour before having a rest in the shade. It flew into the trees near by and then across the road. It was definitely interested in all of us but would not come down. This was Sat May 29th 2010.

This bird was spotted on the Nassagaweya 6th line south of Hwy 7, north of sideroad 25 near Acton and Rockwood. South of Nellis Construction Ltd.

It’s hard to find lost and found sites locally.

Do you have any extra bird cages or toys that your birds simply don’t like? Bring any avian related items to June’s club meeting that you wish to sell. Individuals are also welcome to bring arts and crafts that you think parrot enthusiats would like to buy as well.

Macaw Projects in MexicoJennifer and Haley Weber will give a talk on the Military Macaw Rehabilitation Program which Jennifer visited this winter in Puerto Vallarta. It represents the work of Carlos Bonilla, a Mexican biologist, and Claudia Magallon, a Mexican veterinarian, who are fighting to save the military macaws. They are Mexico’s only native macaw species and they are 70 percent extinct. Slide presentation, DVD and “Adopt A Nest Program” will be discussed. Check out Carlos Bonilla’s blog on PI Press.

There are a pair of lovebirds looking for a good home. Contact me if you are interested.

Jen Weber will also be giving us a short presentation about her encounter with Carlos Bonilla when she was in Mexico. He is involved in the Military Macaw Project.

Suzan will be away and I will be there by 7:30 pm. I won’t be able to stay all evening, so we will have to hold a shorter meeting this month.

Fun and laughter was had by all who attened our Festival of Parrots this year! The birds showed off their beautiful feathering and wonderful talents while their owners demonstrated what you need to do to make your feathered friends dance and sing! We will now be looking at adding a new contest category to next year’s event – where the owner’s antics will be judged as well!

I would like to thank everyone for joining us, helping with set up and clean up and give a special thanks for our friends who helped out out as judges at the event. Lilla, Marie and Al learned a lot about parrots and more about parrot owners than they ever imagined!!

Our 1st Annual Pet Bird Show was a great success however we needed more time and space. Therefore, we are combining our September meeting, Annual Picnic and Festival of Parrots into one major event and moved it to Sunday, September 13th. The location for this year’s event will be the CAW Hall (small school house) located at 611 Silvercreek Parkway in Guelph. A separate flyer will be mailed out with all the details including directions.

The picnic will be pot luck (club will provide drinks). Bring your feathered (and in some cases your “not so feathered”) friends and participate in this year’s Festival of Parrots. If last year was any indication we are definitely going to have a blast! There are lots of “unique” categories so everyone is sure to go home a winner. GTPC Award Ribbons are waiting for your FIDS. We will also have fun activities for owner and parrot alike with prizes for the winners. Don’t miss out on the fun. This year’s proceeds will be donated to the CPC’s Pennies 4 Parrots (www.pennies4parrots.ca) campaign (you can play games / get tickets tickets for as low as $0.01 to participate), so dig into your penny/coin jars and come armed and ready!

If you would like to volunteer to be a judge or help out at one the stations, please let us know.
WHEN Sunday Sep 13th festivities begin at 1:00 PM

WHERE CAW Hall (small school house) located at 611 Silvercreek Parkway in Guelph.

BYOFF (bring you own feathered friend(s))

BYOFTS (bring your own food to share – appetizer, salad, dessert, main dish)

It’s time for our 2nd Annual Buy & Sell. Members are encouraged to bring clean gently used parrot related items (toys, stands, cages, etc.) to sell, trade or give away. If you have a talent for making foraging items or play toys/stands, or perhaps you are into baking goodies for your parrots at home, these too would be great additions and especially enjoyed by our feathered friends.

Some of our members have indicated they will donate any funds raised to the GTPC’s Pennies4Parrots challenge (www.pennies4parrots.ca) to help boost our fund raising dollars.

Emerald Feather (www.emeraldfeather.com) will also be on hand with a selection of goods for sale. They will be donating 20% of all sales to the GTPC Pennies4Parrots fund.

Looking forward to seeing you all on June 10th.

DENVER — A parrot whose cries of alarm alerted his owner when a little girl choked on her breakfast has been honoured as a hero.

Willie, a Quaker parrot, has been given the local Red Cross chapter’s Animal Lifesaver Award.

In November, Willie’s owner, Megan Howard, was baby-sitting for a toddler. Howard left the room and the little girl, Hannah, started to choke on her breakfast.

Willie repeatedly yelled “Mama, baby” and flapped his wings, and Howard returned in time to find the girl already turning blue.

Howard saved Hannah by performing the Heimlich manoeuvre but said Willie “is the real hero.”

“The part where she turned blue is always when my heart drops no matter how many times I’ve heard it,” Hannah’s mother, Samantha Kuusk, told KCNC-TV. “My heart drops in my stomach and I get all teary eyed.”

Willie got his award during a “Breakfast of Champions” event Friday attended by Gov. Bill Ritter and Mayor John Hickenlooper.
